No June Gloom on Maui

Honoring Fathers and Embracing the Hawaiian Summer

June is a wonderful month on Maui, characterized by perfect weather, consistent trade winds, and pleasant daily temperatures. It's a time for celebrating Fathers and embracing the changing seasons.

Let's start by extending a heartfelt "Hau'oli La Makuakane" (Happy Father's Day) to all the past, present, and future fathers on the island. In Hawaiian society, families were traditionally extended, with multiple generations living and working together. The father, known as "makuakāne," had the responsibility of providing for the family, ensuring their safety, and passing down cultural knowledge and traditions to the younger generation.

Fathers in Hawaiian culture also embody the concept of "kuleana," which emphasizes responsibility and accountability. They are expected to fulfill their roles as providers and caregivers, while serving as role models for their children. Important values such as respect for nature, love for the land and culture, and the significance of community are imparted by fathers.

An integral aspect of family life is captured by the Hawaiian saying, "‘Ike aku, ‘ike mai. Kōkua aku, kōkua mai. Pēlā ka nohona ‘ohana" which translates to "Watch, observe. Help others and accept help. That is the family way."

As the summer solstice arrives, Hawaiians refer to it as "Ke Alanui Polohiwa a Ka̅ne," when the sun reaches its northernmost point in the sky. Longer days inspire outdoor activities like hiking, biking, gardening, swimming, and enjoying the south swells while longboard surfing.

The island also offers a variety of entertaining events to relish. One such favorite is the Maui Film Festival, a cherished local tradition spanning 23 years. This unpretentious festival showcases an array of documentaries, unique narratives, short films, and international movies in various captivating Maui venues. This year, all films will be shown at the MACC.

The King Kamehameha Day Parade is held on June 11, 2010, as a State Holiday. It is to honor the father of the Hawaiian Kingdom.  However, Maui's commemoration will take place on June 17 in Lahaina, starting at 9 am.

For a full day of cowboy-themed enjoyment, head Upcountry to the historic town of Makawao on June 24 for the Makawao Stampede Fest 2023 Country Concert 2023. This event promises great western entertainment and invites families to bring tents, chairs, beach mats, and join in the fun.

Regarding Maui's real estate, there is a standstill between sellers and buyers. Property owners with historically low interest rates are hesitant to sell, while many potential buyers wait on the sidelines, monitoring mortgage rate developments. As a result, the median prices for Single-Family Homes and Condos in Maui have reached $1,271,500 and $835,000, respectively.

The Month's Supply of Inventory (Absorption Rate) indicates a shift toward a balanced market, moving away from the strong seller's market experienced in recent years.

In terms of Maui County Government news, the Maui County Council has passed its fiscal year 2024 budget of $1.07 billion, awaiting Mayor Bissen's signature.

This fiscally responsible budget includes increased funding for affordable housing projects and support for nonprofits involved in agricultural promotion, watershed protection, invasive species mitigation, social services, tourism management, and travel costs for youth sports and activities. The Council also approved a new water rate category for hotels and resorts, encouraging water conservation.

In conclusion, the June Report highlights the vibrant happenings on Maui. Remember to embrace the positive energy and live life fully, as expressed in the Hawaiian proverb, "Oi kau ka lau, e hana I ola honua," which means "Live your life while the sun is still shining."

Warmest regards from Team Romvari Realty in Maui, Hawai'i. Aloha!
